Speaking at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute's (ASPI) Sydney Dialogue, the Director-General of National Intelligence, Andrew Shearer, has highlighted the impact of technology on Australia’s rapidly changing geostrategic landscape.
In conversation with ASPI’s Executive Director, Justin Bassi, the Director-General noted the central role of technology – especially artificial intelligence – in shaping national power and global competition.
‘The geopolitical struggle … involves all the domains of national power – diplomatic, economic, military, paramilitary, ideational … technology really is the centre of gravity recently in that struggle, and that's largely for the reason that technology generates power across all those other domains.’
Mr Shearer also emphasised the importance of Australia’s alliances and partnerships to maintaining regional security and resilience.
